bedbound

by Enda Walsh
with Alice Spisa and Woody Neri
April 2018, Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi, Milan

A father and daughter open their eyes in the same bed, she shrunken by illness and seclusion and he, at her feet, shattered by his own existence. The two retrace the story of his life, who has risen from a shrewd young warehouse worker to owning a furniture shop. She lends him her voice and her strength, because in silence she would have to face her own story. And so, amidst exalted tales, amidst hatred spat at each other, with the sky in their heads and horror all around, the two confront each other, clash and grow closer. With a language that touches the gulfs of vulgarity and the most delicate lyrical notes, the text moves in a dreamlike universe, where the most unlikely events cohabit effortlessly with the psychological difficulties of any man. Enda Walsh succeeds in constructing a perfect machine that immortalises the spirit of our times, between blind careerism and a desperate need for redemption, while Margherita Scalise’s direction confines the audience in a claustrophobic yet imaginative space.
